ASSPA is a podcast aggregator, in the form of a perl script which can easily be configured
to automatically download all new episodes of podcasts in which you are interested.
It is GNU/Linux-only, and requires only that you have Perl and the file transfer utility wget
installed. It is not graphical, nor will it ever be for any release made under my name. All
of the existing graphical podcast aggregators seem to have unobtainable library dependancies or
mythical "coming soon" linux versions, and when all that's required is something to sort out
what you've already downloaded, and what you haven't.
It does not require that the podcasts in question be affiliated with iTunes or any other system
for automating the distribution of media - all that is required is that you know the fully-qualified
URL for each podcast's RSS or Atom feed (for example, the Penny-Arcade RSS feed
can be found at http://www.penny-arcade.com/padlc.xml.
A sample configuration file is included in the download.
Disclaimer:
This application was initially written because I felt a personal need for it, and therefore the only true guarantee I will make for it is that it works on my computers. For this reason, it is permanently unstable. I don't believe that it will do anything nasty to your system, but be it clearly understood that you use this software at your own risk. You may of course contact me with any reasonable problems, bugs and the like, and I will try to help, but be aware that they may turn out to be dependancy or system issues, and as such are SEPs*.

A screenshot would not be practical, but a transcript of a typical session may be found here.
Email: laura$ATcybermenology$DOTcom. Mention something about ASSPA in the subject line to be safe from the almighty spam filters. AIM: returnFortyTwo. This may not work, as I really only use that screenname while at work, and the Windows port of Gaim seems to have had a fight with the Oscar server. I fear they're not on speaking terms anymore.
